Discovering Palma with Sovereign
Points of interest for the 'cultural city break' in Palma
Owing to a rich cultural past, the city of Palma de Majorca is home to one of the World’s largest and most impressive cathedrals. Standing by the calm waters of the bay, Gaudì finished its Gothic towers and interior in 1909. Pueblo Español, a recreation of Spain’s 100 most famous buildings, is worth a visit as you can explore all the regions of Spain in one place! For something a little more unusual on your short or weekend break to Palma, head to Abaco near the waterfront. Its 19th century courtyard is decorated with caged birds, wicker chairs, fountains, sculptures and romantic candlelight. In keeping with the surroundings, classical music is played. It’s not a bar, museum nor club, but an experience!Eating out for the 'gastronomic city break'
No luxury city break in Palma is complete without sampling the island’s excellent variety and quality of its homegrown produce. Typical dishes to try are the famous stuff meats, such as sobrasada (local black pig), tumbet (cousin of ratatouille), rabbit cooked in onions, fried red mullet and toothed bream. Feeling adventurous? You could always sample the boiled scorpion fish! For those with a sweet tooth, don’t miss out on the selection of Arabic and Jewish inspired desserts and pastries such as crespells and robiols, but the crème de la crème of Majorcan cakes is the ensaimada.Shopping for the 'retail therapy city break'
The relatively small size of Palma makes it a very manageable shopping destination. Head to the main shopping area of Avinguda Jaume III, or if you are looking for boutiques, the Passeig des Born. You will find the smaller, more specialist shops on the pedestrian streets around Placa Major. There is also a modern shopping mall and hypermarket complex, the Centro Comercial Porto Pi, 1,3 miles (2km) from the centre.Something Exclusive for that 'once in a lifetime city break'
