Discover Lanzarote

Located just 125km off the coast of Africa, Lanzarote benefits from a year-round warm climate, beautiful beaches and a spectacular interior landscape. Fly from any of the UK’s main airports and you will touch down on the island within just a few hours, making it a great destination for a family holiday.

Lanzarote is a mere 60km long, but don’t let its small size deceive you. The island has much to offer its visitors. Explore the south of the island which is famed for its stunning beaches, hidden coves and calm waters, before heading to the north of the island where you can expect to find small fishing villages and delicious seafood restaurants.

The island's impressive volcanic landscapes should be enough to entice you, but with various walking trails, a variety of watersports and a range of fabulous beaches also on offer, there’s plenty to turn your head.

Lanzarote's beaches are plentiful with white and black sand beaches to calm seas for paddling and the perfect waves for surfing, visitors are truly spoilt for choice.

One of the island's most renowned beaches is Playa Grande, in Puerto del Carmen. Playa Grande is the resort’s main beach and has a lively atmosphere with bars, shops and restaurants just a stone’s throw away. Also, but hidden away in Los Ajaches nature reserve, is arguably one of the island’s most beautiful beaches, Papagayo. With its fine white sand and sheltered location, it is the ideal beach for swimming, snorkeling and relaxing in the sun.

Many of Lanzarote’s beaches are known for their fantastic range of watersports. However, the pretty little cove of Playa Chica is of particular note. Surrounded by volcanic rock formations, Playa Chica is the perfect destination for keen snorkelers and divers.

Lanzarote's cuisine is heavily influenced by mainland Spain but the island has its own delicacies that simply must be tried.

Papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes), is a very popular dish and can be found throughout the island. The potatoes which are grown in the black gravel fields are served with mojo, a rich sauce made with garlic, olive oil, vinegar, herbs, and a selection of spices.

Being an island, Lanzarote’s restaurant menus are filled with fresh fish and seafood. Dorada (sea bream), vieja (parrot fish) and cherne (sea bass) are the most common choices available and because the fish is so fresh, are typically, simply served grilled.

Lanzarote offers a delightful medley of landmarks and monuments, both natural and manmade. One of the island’s most famous landmarks is the Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism. Jameos del Aqua is a unique geological formation located inside a volcanic tunnel created by the eruption of La Corona Volcano. Visitors can discover arts and culture created by César Manrique and a glistening natural lake with crystal clear waters. The Mirador del Rio, Lanzarote’s most famous viewpoint, affords outstanding views over the Atlantic Ocean.

Visitors must take a trip to the village of Yaiza, before travelling further north to Timanfaya National Park. Declared a National Park in 1974, Timanfaya spans across an area of 51.07 km and is one of the island’s most popular attractions. Timanfaya is of volcanic origin, the last known eruption took place in the 18th century.

Lanzarote’s impressive landscape offers numerous opportunities for hiking and because of this it has become a popular pastime with both visitors and inhabitants of the island. Follow the well kept trails and your exertions will be rewarded with sightings of the island’s wildlife, beautiful scenery and stunning views.

The pleasantly warm climate, coupled with the Atlantic Ocean location, makes Lanzarote the perfect destination for those who enjoy watersports. Offering a variety of different activities from surfing and wind-surfing, to scuba-diving and marine excursions, the opportunities for fun on this island are endless.
