Paradise is closer than you think
With its spectacular landscape, beautiful sandy beaches, warm climate and vibrant culture, Lanzarote promises to offer something for everyone. Nicknamed the ‘land of eternal spring’, Lanzarote benefits from a year-round warm climate with temperatures rarely falling below 17°C in the winter and 25°C in summer. Just 4 hours away from any of the UK’s main airports, this is the ideal destination for anything from a perfect family holiday to a quick getaway for two for your vitamin D fix. Lanzarote is the fourth largest island of the Canary Islands with volcanic origin. Born through fiery eruptions, the island’s extravagant rock formations formed from solidified lava streams should be enough to entice you, but with numerous museums and art galleries, bountiful local cuisine specialities and endless activity opportunities from water sports to scenic walks there truly is something for everyone and much to see.
Being an island, Lanzarote’s restaurant menus are filled with fresh fish and seafood which taste great. Many dishes are simply grilled due to their freshness. There are also a multitude of Tapas bars to be found around the island that can be accompanied with the excellent selection of fine wines produced locally in the vineyards of La Geria. Keep an eye out for the confirmation dates for the Tasting Lanzarote Festival Enogastronómico. This food and wine tasting event is a great opportunity to taste locally produced cuisine, meet local growers and visit local restaurants.
Teguise market is held every Sunday morning, where wanderers can explore the cobbled streets, take in the sights and stalls and watch the beautiful old town come to life. It’s also a great opportunity to try the local food. If Lanzarote’s volcanic backdrop really excites you, visiting the Fire Mountains in Timanfaya National Park is definitely one to put on your holiday checklist. Located on an active crater it is possible to taste dishes cooked in the heat of the volcano; but don’t worry, the last known eruption took place in the 18th century.
Things to do
The Lanzarote Wine Run held in June is a must for lovers of sport, gastronomy, wine and exploring the natural environment. Run or walk through the La Geria wine region, whilst sampling some of the region’s best wines on your route. Participants also receive tickets to the Traditional Cuisine Festival for taking part. This race is a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to enjoy the stunning landscape of the island as well as appreciate the innovative work of cultivating vines on this hostile volcanic land. The sun-kissed island of Lanzarote is the perfect destination for those who also enjoy water sports such as wind surfing, surfing and scuba-diving. In the north you’ll find the impressive beach of Famara amongst others such as Costa Teguise, Arrieta, Caletón Blanco, Órzola. Famara beach stretches over 3km and is the surfing hotspot of Lanzarote. It also makes great entertainment for those who want to simply sit back, relax and enjoy the impressive talents and love for the ocean showcased here.
If water sports don’t float your boat, why not delve deeper into the authentic agriculture of Lanzarote by visiting the small museum of Casa-Museo del Campesino in San Bartolomé, a great tribute to the handicrafts of the island. Or find tranquillity away from the beach in one of Lanzarote’s many spas, thalassotherapy and wellness centres to help you unwind during your holiday. When the sun sets, there’s still plenty of music and fun to be found around the island. Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca are a couple of excellent locations known for lively nightlife, each with a great selection of restaurants, bars and entertainment so you’ll never be short of things to do.
Places to be, sights to see
Lanzarote highly praises the volcanic nature of the island and embraces this in the most beautiful way. All over the island, visitors can discover arts and culture created by local born visionary artist, architect and environmentalist César Manrique, who beautifully entwines his creations seamlessly into the unique landscape. The Jardín de Cactus (Cactus Garden) is Manrique´s latest creation and perfect example of innovation integrated into the landscape. Located in Guatiza, Teguise, this display has over 10,000 species of cactus from around the world.
Amongst the many stunning volcanic features of Lanzarote, it also boasts the longest Volcanic Tunnel in the world, the Atlantida Tunnel (Tunnel of Atlantis), which is over 7 km long with 21 caves known as jameos dotted along its length including the La Cueva de los Verdes. Cueva de los Verdes is a fascinating cave created by the eruptions of the Corona Volcano (El Volcán de la Corona) where visitors can experience a spectacular journey into the depths of the volcanic ground.
