Originally a small fishing village, Elounda has blossomed into one of the best-equipped resorts in Crete and attracts a discerning and cosmopolitan clientele. Like nearby Aghios Nikolaos, its location overlooking the dazzling blue Bay of Mirabello is superb, with undulating hills swathed in almond and olive groves providing a suitably lush backdrop. Much of Elounda's charm has been preserved, with a pretty church in the village square looking out over the harbour. The nearby island of Spinalonga, with its ruined Venetian castle, protects the bay and its tranquil waters are superb for swimming and watersports. Dine in a fish taverna or catch the sunset at Upper Elounda. By day or night, you will be absorbed by a relaxed, genial atmosphere.
