It has its share of pretty harbours, but Crete is handsome in a more dramatic muscular way. Its landscape is slashed with gorges, scoured with valleys and dominated at every turn by mountainous terrain. A car helps you nose inland to discover almost hidden villages and to visit Knossos, the largest and most impressive of the Minoan palaces, which reached its cultural peak over 3,000 years ago.
