The island of Captain Corelli and the largest in the Ionian chain, Kefalonia is a mystical place of underground lakes and bare mountains, circled by eagles. Local legends tell of gold in the hills and claim the much-photographed Myrtos Bay, with possibly the bluest sea on the planet, is unfathomably deep: this being Greece, no one has checked the legends out.
