Rhodes Holidays - Greece
Not only is Rhodes the biggest of the Dodecanese islands, but it's also the sunniest and most visited Greek island. Its coastline is edged with sandy and pebbly beaches, its interior is blanketed with pine forests and olive groves, and its capital is home to one of the finest walled towns in Europe.
As well as its famous old town, Rhodes Town also has a cosmopolitan side, with restaurants, bars, boutiques, and a pair of beaches (one sand, one shingle). Further down the coast is the seaside town of Lindos, whose sugar-cube houses climb up a hillside towards an ancient acropolis.
Things to do in Rhodes
Explore Rhodes Town's old quarter
The old quarter of Rhodes Town is a jumble of architectural styles, from medieval and Venetian to Ottoman and Byzantine. Highlights include the lavish Palace of the Grand Masters, the Temple of Aphrodite (which dates back to the 3rd century BC) and the Archaeology Museum, set inside the 15th-century knights' hospital.
Visit the Acropolis of Lindos
Scattered on a hilltop overlooking Lindos is its acropolis, a collection of ancient ruins. You'll find crumbling Doric columns, a church decorated with frescoes, and temples dating back to the 4th century. The acropolis also offers up great views of the town and sea. The climb up is steep, but there are donkeys available if you can't manage the walk.
Wander through the Valley of the Butterflies
Petaloudes - better known as the Valley of the Butterflies - is at its best during July and August. Hundreds of colourful tiger moths are drawn to the gorge, and flutter around the forests, river and waterfalls. There's a museum here, too, dedicated to the valley's flora and fauna.
