Luxury Skiathos Holidays
The pine-carpeted island of Skiathos forms part of the Sporades island group, which speckle the Aegean Sea. Cosmopolitan Skiathos Town, in the east of the island, is the main hub, while along the sheltered southern coastline you'll find small resorts and traditional seaside villages. The island's northern coast is mainly undeveloped, so is ideal if you want to escape for the day.
Skiathos' sandy beaches are known as some of the nicest in Greece. Two of the best include Koukounaries Beach, a wide, sandy bay on the south-west coast, and Lalaria Beach in the north, a stretch of white pebbles only accessible by boat.
Things to do in Skiathos
Buy souvenirs from the Monastery of Evangelistria
The 18th-century Monastery of Evangelistria sits on a hillside surrounded by pines and fir trees. You can drive there or get the bus from Skiathos Town. You can also walk - from Skiathos Town it takes about an hour. Inside, you can see exhibits of rare holy books and manuscripts, Byzantine icons and silver crosses, plus there's the chance to buy honey and wine made by the monks.
Travel across to Skopelos
Ferries and boat tours leave Skiathos Town's harbour regularly to visit the neighbouring island of Skopelos. Wander through Skopelos Town's cobbled streets, then visit one of its picture-postcard beaches or whitewashed villages. Tours often stop off at the island of Alonissos as well, which is part of the Sporades Marine Park.
Explore Kastro's ruins
The clifftop medieval town of Kastro was once the biggest on Skiathos, but has been abandoned for almost 200 years. Nowadays, you can access the ruins on boat trips or with a 4x4. The site has great views across the sea, and there's a beach at the bottom of the cliff for a post-tour swim.
Hotels in Skiathos
You'll find the lion's share of hotels and villas on Skiathos' south coast. If you're after a peaceful, adults-only retreat, take a look at the hillside Aegean Suites Hotel in Megali Ammos. It's next door to a white-sand beach and features a sea-view pool and a champagne bar. Skiathos Town is close by, too. The five-star Skiathos Princess Hotel has a more family-friendly vibe, with a children's pool and kids' club.
