Smugglers Cove, Zante

Luxury Zakynthos Holidays

Settled just south of Kefalonia is Zakynthos, also known as Zante. This Ionian island had a bit of a party reputation in the past, but nowadays it's attracting visitors for its stunning scenery and family-friendly golden sands. The beaches (which are some of the best in Greece) vary from long swathes of sand to peaceful coves protected by dramatic cliffs. Inland, meanwhile, you have a wonderful mix of olive groves, lemon-tree orchards and rolling hills. What puts Zakynthos firmly on the holiday map, though, is loggerhead turtles. The island is one of the most famous nesting spots in the Med for these friendly-faced sea creatures - keep an eye out for them in the summer months.

Things to do in Zakynthos

Photograph Smuggler's Cove
Smuggler's Cove, or Navagio Beach, sits on the south-east coast of the island and is one of Greece's most famous beaches. Thanks to its turquoise waters and soaring backdrop of chalk-white cliffs, this photogenic spot often makes the front cover of glossy travel magazines. Keep your camera handy for a close-up of the shipwreck, allegedly a smuggler's ship that washed ashore back in the '80s. The only way to access this stunning area is boat - they depart frequently from Porto Vromi.

Explore Zakynthos Town
Zakynthos' capital is best explored on foot - the little streets are lined with cafes, sweet shops, restaurants, jewellers and boutiques. If museums are your thing (or you'd just like a break from the sun), then Zakynthos Town has a few to explore, including a fascinating Byzantine museum. There's also a Venetian castle set in the hills above the town.

Take a boat trip to Turtle Island
Turtle Island will win the hearts of all. Trips here involve visiting the nesting grounds of loggerhead turtles - the island is protected by the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, so it's all set up to avoid any disturbance to the turtles. Fun fact: a bird's-eye view of the island reveals it to be the shape of a turtle. Coincidence?
