Luxury Italian Cities Holidays
Italy's cities are spot on for sightseeing breaks or as jumping-off points for exploring more of the country's best bits. Rome, AKA the Eternal City, lines up big-name sights like the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum, while Verona houses an ancient amphitheatre and the houses of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. As for Venice, it's one of the most unique cities going. It's criss-crossed with canals and pretty bridges, and filled with elegant palazzos and townhouses.
Vatican City, Rome
Set aside a day to visit this tiny city-state, home to the Roman Catholic Church. Spend the morning checking out the paintings and sculptures in the Vatican Museums (you'll find the Sistine Chapel here, too), then head over to St. Peter's Basilica, the biggest church in the world. Climb to the top of its dome and you'll have widescreen views over Rome and the Vatican.
Arena di Verona, Verona
Verona's huge Roman amphitheatre is one of the biggest in Italy. It sits on the edge of Piazza Bra, right in the city's historical heart. During the summer months, it acts as an al fresco opera theatre, hosting atmospheric performances of classics like Aida and Tosca.
St. Mark's Basilica, Venice
St. Mark's Basilica dominates the eastern end of Piazza San Marco, and is packed with Byzantine, Gothic and Romanesque artworks. Its interior is coated in gleaming gold mosaics, which illustrate scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Just opposite the basilica is a campanile - take the lift up to the top and get a bird's-eye view of the city's canals and palazzos.

In Venice, for example, you could stay at the Hotel Westin Europa Regina, which dates back to the 17th century and has a prime position on the Grand Canal.
