Luxury Neapolitan Riviera Holidays
The Neapolitan Riviera is a dramatic stretch of coastline that runs south from Naples, taking in the seaside town of Sorrento and Amalfi Coast villages such as Positano and Ravello. Steep cliffs run down towards the sea, terraced with vineyards and groves of citrus and olive trees. Hiking trails zig-zag across the hills, including the famous Path of the Gods, which joins Positano with Agerola, a little hilltop town.
The towns and villages here look like they've been lifted from a postcard, and are a favourite with the jet set. Just across the water are the islands of Capri and Ischia, both well worth a day trip. The excavated sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum are easily reached by train, and give a real insight into ancient Roman life.
Things to do on the Neapolitan Riviera
Pompeii is a short train ride from Sorrento, in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. Buried in ash back in 79AD, it now offers up an amazing look at life in ancient Roman times. The area has been painstakingly excavated, and you can now walk along the cobbled streets, past houses, temples and theatres.
A few stops further along the train line from Pompeii is Herculaneum (Ercolano in Italian), a holiday resort that was also buried after Vesuvius' big eruption. The site is smaller than Pompeii, but better preserved as it was buried under volcanic mud instead of ash - look out for the wall frescoes and mosaics.
Spend a day on Ischia or Capri
The islands of Capri and Ischia make perfect day trips. On Capri, you can browse designer boutiques, tuck in to lunch at stylish beach club restaurants and take a boat to the Blue Grotto sea cave, while Ischia's main draw is its natural spas, where you can soak in hot springs and slather yourself in mineral-rich mud.
