Costa del Sol Holidays - Spain
The Costa del Sol curves around Spain's southern coast and is fringed with miles of golden sand. But although the beaches are a big draw here, the area has plenty more going for it. Like its pueblos blancos - the pretty, whitewashed towns and villages that freckle the hillsides here. Or the rolling sierras that make great walking and cycling territory.
The Costa del Sol also offers plenty of day trip opportunities. Cross the border into Gibraltar to see its cheeky Barbary apes, explore the sight-packed cities of Seville and Cordoba, or tour the impressive Alhambra Palace in Granada. The often-overlooked city of Malaga is also worth a look - it's had something of a renaissance over the past few years, and is now home to a slew of museums and cultural attractions.
Things to do on the Costa del Sol
Spend a day exploring Seville
The sultry city of Seville makes a great day trip. Tour its impressive Gothic cathedral and relax in Maria Luisa Parque and the Plaza de Espana, then delve into the city's narrow backstreets to find a bar for tapas and sherry.
Visit Granada's Alhambra
Granada's big attraction is the huge Alhambra. Built in traditional Moorish style, it's acted as a fortress, palace and walled city, and is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While you're in the city, don't miss the beautiful Generalife Gardens, with their serene pools and fountains, or the atmospheric Albaicin quarter.
Wander the old quarter of Ronda
Ronda is probably Andalucia's most famous whitewashed town, and straddles the huge El Tajo Gorge. On one side is the old town - one of the oldest in Spain - where you'll find Moorish buildings, cobbled lanes and a church which was converted from a mosque back in the 13th century. On the other is the more modern part of town, which houses a traditional bullring.
Hotels in Costa del Sol
The Costa del Sol is edged with luxe hotels worth seeking out. Take the Hotel Fuerte Marbella - it has a prime seafront location in the centre of town, and comes with a smart spa and beauty centre. Or the Hotel Balcon de Europa, an intimate hotel right in Nerja's historical heart. The Gran Melia Don Pepe is another standout property, perched on the water's edge close to the centre of Marbella.
