Luxury Bangkok Holidays
Bangkok is a whirlwind of a city. Tuk-tuks, taxis and motorbikes whizz past super-malls and grand luxury hotels, locals haggle for their weekly shop in lively markets, and the sound of street food sizzling usually isn't far away. There are pockets of calm, though - converted rice barges meander up the Chao Phraya River offering slow-paced sightseeing, and traditional spas are tucked away in quiet courtyards and gardens.
Bangkok is just a short flight from Thailand's islands and beach resorts, so why not finish your stay off with a week or two on the beaches of Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak or Koh Samui?
Things to do in BangkokVisit a Thai temple
Elaborately decorated temples are dotted around the city. Two of the most popular are Wat Pho and Wat Arun. Wat Pho is where you'll find the famous reclining Buddha - a 46-metre-long gold-leaf statue of the Buddha lying back as he passes into nirvana. Close to Wat Pho is Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn. It stands next to the Chao Phraya River and features an 80-metre-high central pagoda, which you can climb up for city views.
Shop for souvenirs at Chatuchak Market
This huge market (one of the biggest in the world) sells just about anything you can think of. Thousands of stalls hawk clothes, homeware, trinkets, books, food and even pets to the throngs of shoppers who descend each weekend. Plan on spending at least a few hours there - try to arrive before 10am to beat the crowds.
Take in the views from a rooftop bar
Bangkok loves its rooftop bars. There are dozens of them perched on top of hotels and skyscrapers, and they're perfect for sundowners. Order a cocktail or a cold Singha beer, then sit back and watch as the sun sets and the city starts to light up.
