Turkey is a real fusion of east and west, and of old and new. Ancient ruins sit just a few kilometres from contemporary hotels, Ottoman mosques stand next to Roman forts, and modern shopping malls spring up next to traditional bazaars.
Beaches are big business here, with stretches of sand and fine shingle edging the coastline. A lot of hotels will have their own private beach, but you can also find plenty of quiet, unspoilt spots if you venture a little way out of the resorts. Head away from the coast, and you can discover hillside hamlets and walk and cycle through shady pine forests.
You'll find plenty in the way of history, too, from Lycian tombs carved into cliff faces to the huge, mountainside theatre in the ancient city of Termessos. The eerie ghost town of Kayaköy, near Olu Deniz, is also worth a look - it was abandoned back in the 1920s after a population exchange with Greece.
It's easy to get a taster of local life here, whether it's tucking in to a dinner of Turkish specialities by Bodrum's harbour, sipping a glass of sweet apple tea in the little port of Göcek, or haggling for handmade textiles in a bazaar.
