Aegean Coast Holidays - Turkey
The Aegean Coast stretches along the middle section of Turkey's western edge, and centres around the historical city of Bodrum. Set by the waterfront, Bodrum is a perfect example of Turkey's blend of old and new, east and west - a grand castle sits next to the sleek marina, and Ottoman mosques and whitewashed houses are offset by stylish bars and pavement cafes.
This part of Turkey also puts you within easy reach of ancient Roman ruins, Greek temples and one of the best-preserved classical cities in the world - Ephesus.
Things to do on the Aegean Coast
Visit ancient Ephesus
Ephesus was once one of the most important cities in Asia Minor, with a population of more than 250,000 and a healthy number of pilgrims flocking to see the Temple of Artemis. Nowadays, it's one of the world's best-preserved ancient metropolises - even with much of the city still to be unearthed. Highlights include the Library of Celsus, Augustus Gate, and the 25,000-seater theatre. For a small extra fee, you can also visit some beautifully restored hillside villas.
Wallow in Pamukkale's hot springs
It's a long day trip - four hours' drive from Bodrum - but a swim in the waters at Pamukkale is well worth the journey. The thermal springs here cascade down a hillside, pooling on white limestone terraces (they look a bit like cotton wool - Pamukkale means cotton castle).
Head to Greece for the day
Ferries from Bodrum take around 20 minutes to reach the Greek island of Kos. You'll weigh anchor in the capital, Kos Town. Tour the castle, have a drink by the harbour, or head further afield and explore the island's beaches and countryside villages.
