Halkidiki - also sometimes spelt as Chalkidiki - is found on northern Greece’s mainland. The region is peppered with three beautiful peninsulas, and it is pure joy to drive from Kassandra to Sithonia to Athos, drinking in the gorgeous scenery that differentiates mainland Greece from its islands. Every part of Halkidiki hums with something different - Kassandra is known for its sweeping beaches, Sithonia is far quieter while Athos is home to Mount Athos, a male-only monastic community that has preserved its Byzantine rituals for over a thousand years. This is a region that is full of history and myth, so if you can bear to tear yourself off the sunlounger, our advice is to head for the hinterland.
For guests that crave Greecian hospitality and authenticity, you must make the hour’s drive (or short ferry ride) to Nikiti. This little village is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque villages on the mainland with its own architectural style that includes centuries old stone-built houses. Order an ouzo in a local taverna, soak up the late afternoon sun and gaze amazed at the glorious views as the Toroneos Gulf spreads out beneath you.
