Documentation and legal requirements - Cyprus

Back to Sovereign weddings

The information below is intended as a guide, as documentation and legal requirements change regularly. Please check with your Wedding Coordinator and with the relevant embassy before arranging your documentation.

Legal requirements
Minimum residency period prior to wedding: 3 days (excluding day of arrival, weekends and bank holidays).

Witnesses required: 2. Witnesses can be arranged by the Wedding Planner if you are travelling alone.

Minimum Age: 18 (If under 18, see below).

Marriage Certificate issued in local language? No – issued in English.

Other requirements: A couple of days after arrival the wedding planner will meet you at the Town Hall to complete the paperwork and make the payment to the clerk for the marriage license. This will cost £CYP165, approximately £200. For those marrying in a Civil wedding, this will give you a chance to view the venue. For those marrying in a church, you will also need to attend a church interview with the vicar / priest and church coordinator. Hotel based weddings involve extra charges such as the call out fee of the marriage officer and local charges to the hotel for use of venue (see each individual wedding page for more information).

Documentation requirements
The following documents must be obtained in the UK and sent to Sovereign no later than 12 weeks before departure. We need two photocopies of the following documents. All original documents must be taken to resort – photocopies of documents are not accepted in resort.

Full 10-year British passports? Yes.

Birth certificates? Yes.

If never previously married: Single status statutory declaration? Yes. A Single Status Statutory Declaration (one per person) must have been stamped and certified by a Solicitor and issued within 6 months of the return date of travel.

Certificate of No Impediment? For couples residing in Scotland, this may be used as an alternative to the Single Status Statutory Declaration. A certificate of no impediment must have been stamped and certified by a Solicitor and issued within 3 months of the intended date of marriage (not necessary if you have a single status statutory declaration).

If divorced: Decree absolute (the townhall will keep this). Divorcees will not be accepted by the catholic church.

If widowed: Spouse’s death certificate and previous marriage certificate (the townhall will keep this).

If adopted: Adoption certificate.

If name changed: Proof of deed poll or statutory declaration. This is also required for divorcees or widows who have reverted back to their maiden name.

If under 18: Parental consent in the form of an affidavit or statutory declaration, stamped and signed by a solicitor.

Also required:
Photocopies of the picture pages of the witnesses’ passports.
You will need to sign the application papers, Declaration of Oath and obtain the marriage license. The cost for the marriage license is approximately CY£165 (transfer costs will be incurred, payable locally).

Baptism certificates (proving that one of the wedding couple is baptised in the name of the Trinity in an Anglican Church) or letter to prove religion
