Documentation and legal requirements - Jamaica

The information below is intended as a guide, as documentation and legal requirements change regularly. Please check with your Wedding Coordinator and with the relevant embassy before arranging your documentation.

Legal requirements
Minimum residency period prior to wedding: 2 days (excluding day of arrival, weekends and bank holidays)

Witnesses required: 2. Witnesses can be provided if you are travelling alone.

Minimum Age: 18 (If under 21, see below).

Marriage Certificate issued in local language? Yes. This may take 3-6 months to be returned to the UK.

Other requirements: US$200 fee for government license and marriage certificate to be paid in the form of a certified cheque or international money order and sent to Sovereign along with the documentation outlined below.

Documentation requirements
The following documents must be obtained in the UK and sent to Sovereign no later than 12 weeks before departure. We need two photocopies of the following documents. All original documents must be taken to resort – photocopies of documents are not accepted in resort.

Full 10-year British passports? Yes

Birth certificates? Yes – full.

If never previously married: Single status statutory declaration? No

Certificate of No Impediment? No.

If divorced: Decree Absolute.

If widowed: Spouses Death Certificate and Previous Marriage Certificate

If adopted: Adoption Certicate.

If name changed: Deed Poll. This is also required for divorcees or widows who have reverted back to their maiden name.

If under 21: Parental consent in the form of an affidavit or statutory declaration, stamped and signed by a solicitor.

Certification / Legalisation / Translation of all documents? Yes. All photocopies are required to be stamped by a Notary or solicitor and then written in red or blue ink. The Notary must confirm that they are true and accurate copies of the original and sign and date each copy. The solicitor’s stamp must state that they are a solicitor. Copies must then be sent to your Sovereign Wedding Coordinator who will send them to Jamaica via courier at a cost of £35 per couple.
