Start your family holiday in South Africa in Gansbaai, where you and your family are sure to enjoy the many activities and adventures on offer. Located near the southern tip of Africa the meeting of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans brings together a rich marine biodiversity including dolphins, whales, sharks and more amazing creatures for children to see. Next stop is Cape Town where you can experience the cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain, see the penguins on Boulders Beach and visit the Two Oceans Aquarium. 

North west of Johannesburg you’ll find Sun City Resort, which is a playground packed full of activities for both adults and children. Complement 4x4 safaris and game drives in Pilansberg National Park with fantastic facilities, including a water park, themed restaurants, cinema and a maze.

Days 1 & 2 : London to Cape Town

Fly direct from London to Cape Town.

Land in Cape Town International Airport where a private transfer will be waiting to take you to Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, which is set amidst the native ancient Fynbos trees, overlooking the Gansbaai area.

Days 3 & 4 : Explore Gansbaai

Gansbaai is well known for its natural beauty, sports and activities, with stunning landscapes to explore in lots of ways. Spend your days enjoying the facilities at the supremely comfortable Garden Lodge on the Grootbos Reserve, an eco-reserve tucked between mountains, forest and ocean where you can make the most of the many areas to relax within the lodge. 

Included in your stay are a host of activities, including mountain biking, hiking, horse riding and excursions along the coastal roads. From June to December there are excellent chances to watch whales from the land and visit the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary; perfect for younger children. The expert staff will teach them about the diseased, injured or distressed animals who are going through a rehabilitation process before being released back into the wild.

Day 5 : Travel to Cape Town
A private transfer will take you from Grootbos in Gansbaai to Cape Town, where you can relax at your hotel or explore the V&A waterfront.

Day 6 : Explore the Cape Peninsula
Explore the incredible sights of the Cape Peninsula today with an included tour. Start your day with the cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain (weather permitting) where you can enjoy panoramic views and chances to see the little Dassies that inhabit the mountain top.

Jutting out into the Atlantic and Indian Oceans the Cape Peninsula is an outcrop of rocky mountains that afford dramatic sea views. 52 kilometres long you’ll find Cape Point at the southern tip of the Peninsula and Table Mountain at the northern end. Enjoy the views and stopping off points along the road where you can hop out and soak up the vistas.  

Next on your route back to Cape Town is Boulders Beach, which is home to a colony of endangered African penguins, threatened by commercial fishing in their traditional feeding grounds. Stroll on the board-walks above the beach, designed for you to be able to get up close to the penguins and where you can be amused by their antics.
Days 7 & 8 : Get to know Cape Town
Spend two days exploring Cape Town’s many activities, with something on offer for the whole family. The waterfront itself is vibrant, and there are many boat excursions on offer from here, including to Robben Island where President Mandela was incarcerated. 

The Two Oceans Aquarium is a must, with its fascinating exhibits and exotic underwater creatures. Children will love learning all about the different fish, mammals and rich bio-diversity of Cape Town’s surrounding oceans, as well as handling starfish and hermit crabs. And don’t miss the Cape Town Science Centre with its myriad interactive exhibits. The Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens are home to an exciting tree canopy walkway and a mountain bike trail. Alternatively, give your family an insight into the lives of the less fortunate by taking them on an organised tour of the nearby townships.
Days 9, 10 & 11 : Explore Madikwe Game Reserve

You will be transferred to Cape Town Airport for your flight to Johannesburg, where you will be met and transferred by private vehicle to your accommodation in the Madikwe Game Reserve. Madikwe, with its rugged terrain, bold colours and rich variety of species, makes for fantastic photographic opportunities.

There is plenty for your family to enjoy during your stay at the Madikwe Safari Lodge. You can join safaris in open 4x4 vehicles, twice daily in the early morning and late afternoon when the wildlife is more active. Go in search of leopards and chameleon, rhino and dung beetles, giraffe and elephant shrew - no two safari drives are ever the same. For the lucky the endangered wild dog will be a highlight of any drive.

Children’s activities are also run throughout the day; offering younger guests the chance to explore the Eco House, which is built especially for children and offers arts and crafts, drawing and games centred around learning about the wildlife on the reserve. You can remain with your children at the Eco House or enjoy a break while qualified staff keep them entertained. Children can also learn about animal tracking, get up close to the safe insects of the reserve, make their own pizzas, try star gazing and much more.

Madikwe Safari Lodge

A full board stay here includes two game drives per day and an extensive daily children’s programme of activities. Over 16 year olds are able to go on bush walks in search of the smaller species that make up the ecosystem. Stay in one of 12 suites with outdoor showers, a private plunge pool and log burning fire. Babysitting is also available. 
Days 12 & 13 : Make a splash at Sun City
A private transfer will take you from Madikwe to Sun City Resort where you can settle into your opulent hotel, The Palace of the Lost City, which will surely fascinate your children. Sun City is a safe, integrated resort offering a vast range of activities and entertainment. In the afternoon you will have the chance to explore the resort and visit the Valley of the Waves Water Park, play a round of mini golf or take a Segway tour.

Spend your days enjoying free unlimited access to the Valley of the Waves Water Park. Kids of all ages will love the many rides and slides, as well as the wave pool, lazy river and relaxing Royal Baths swimming pool.  

The resort offers plenty of activities for your family. There is a Mining Store which offers games, including hunting and digging for gold, a spectacular Forest of Lights and the Magic Company which has bowling, games and more. There is also a complementary children’s activities programme, including bumper boats, a mini steam train ride, under 18s club and animal world. And adults can enjoy the casino or a round of golf on the Gary Player championship course.

Places you will explore during your Safari holiday

Gansbaai and Walker Bay
Gansbaai is the ideal place for those who love action and adventure coupled with stunning natural surroundings. Explore the cliffs and beaches of the coastline with walking or horse riding tours, or head to the sea for boat trips where you can search for whales, sharks and other incredible marine life. The very brave will enjoy shark cave diving, with the chance to see one of the world’s most feared creatures - Great White Sharks. 

If you prefer to stick to the land you can try hiking, mountain biking and quad biking through the stunning scenery, as well as horse riding along the beautiful beaches. The area is also home to a fascinating history and culture, with lighthouses, ancient cave art, sea caves and a museum to explore. 
Cape Town
No visitor fails to love the vibrant atmosphere of Cape Town; a stunning city with plenty of activities and natural landscapes just waiting to be explored. A trip to see the penguins at Boulders Beach is a must, with opportunities to learn about these amazing creatures and maybe even swim alongside them. 

Take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain from where you can enjoy views over the city and surrounding Atlantic Ocean. Amongst many other things to do, in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens you can learn about the fascinating native species of flora and fauna, as well as exploring the bridges and lawns. The Two Oceans Aquarium is the ideal day out for families, or you could ride the giant wheel at the V&A waterfront. 
North West of Johannesburg
As a complete contrast, enjoy the natural landscapes and see more of Africa’s wildlife in the malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve. Here you can explore 200,000 acres of game reserve, learn about the area’s conservation efforts and enjoy plenty of child friendly activities which are run by your lodge. 

The area is also home to Sun City Resort. As a counterpoint to being on safari you can spend your days at the world class Valley of the Waves Water Park where you can watch the children try the slides, rides and wave pools as you relax by the Roman Baths swimming pool. Play golf, get lost in the Maze of the Lost City, or lose in the Casino – the choice is yours.

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Experience natural beauty on a huge scale at Victoria Falls. Apart from its natural beauty Victoria Falls is an adventure capital for all ages. Visit a crocodile farm, zip line through the forest or be a flying fox over the river, canoe the Zambezi or hike down the gorge. You can even swim in Devil’s Pool, which is located on the lip of the Falls. For the truly adventurous there are activities including bungee jumping, gorge swings and rafting through some of the most exciting white water in the world.
