When to go
May and June see beach-perfect temperatures reaching the early 30s, while in July and August you can sometimes see the mercury hitting 40 degrees. If you’re a diver, the summer months are a great time to spot manta rays and turtles. October to May is a good time to visit if you like things warm but not too hot – even in January, average highs are in the early 20s.
UK citizens require a Visa to enter Egypt. British passport holders can purchase a 30 day Visa for USD25 at the airport.
It is customary to tip around 10% in bars and restaurants, as well as offering a small tip to hotel staff.
Introduction to languages
Arabic is the main language in Egypt. Most Egyptians also speak fluent English.
Beach resorts are relaxed, especially in touristy or international areas. When visiting areas of cultural or religious significance women must cover their arms, shoulders, legs and heads. Men should wear clothes with long sleeves and trousers.
Events and festivals
Leylet en Nuktah is a celebration of the rising waters of the Nile and is held on the 17th June every year. The festival includes delicious Egyptian picnics by the river’s banks, with some visitors camping by the Nile overnight. Street parties and festivities run throughout the night and there is also music and dancing.
Sham al-Naseem is a celebration of the beginning of spring and is held on the 21st March. It includes a get together of friends and family who enjoy picnics along the banks of the river.
