About the location
Jabal Akhdar is right at the heart of the Al Hajar Mountains. Jebel Shams (the highest mountain in Oman) and Wadi Ghul (AKA the Grand Canyon of Oman) put the region on the tourist map. But even away from these giants, you can expect a dramatic landscape that soars up to 2,000-metre-high craggy peaks and then plunges back down to terraced valleys, fortress-topped ravines and rural hamlets.
Lodgings around here are remote – but that’s the best thing about them. Hotel sun terraces and swimming pools peer over canyons, while activities tend towards guided hikes and rock climbing. But although far-flung, the hotels in Jabal Akhdar are still only three hours’ drive away from the seafaring capital of Muscat.
Jabal Akhdar also has its own microclimate. It’s less desert and more Mediterranean, so you’ll come across unexpected finds like pomegranate and walnut orchards, plus mountainside rose terraces that turn pink in spring. These local specialities pop up all over Omani cuisine – watch out for Damask rosewater and apricot-sweetened curries.
2 hours 30 minutes from Muscat airport.

The problem with the modern age of the internet is you can do so much research on everything and anything that by the time you experience an item your expectations can be hard to surpass. Well I am please to say that the team at Alila have done a fabulous job of exceeding our expectations.
The first thing you notice as you drive up to the resort is how exceptionally well designed it is. This initial observation is carried out right through the resort not only on the exteriors but the interiors too. The designers of the resort have truly done a an amazing job. Photos of both the resort and the views just simply do not do the venue justice. We travelled with our one year old son and the hotel catered for him very well.
We stayed in a ridge-view suite, the suite had a huge bed (probably the size of two king size beds) and furnished very well. It has a large bathroom and a dressing room too. The suite came with a balcony which contained a large daybed. I had read a few review complaining about the poor speeds, we were had good coverage and speeds in excess of 60mbs. They offered excellent turndown service with a treat of the local halwa which is so delectable.
Staff were generally very good and service was consistently high. Alila had definitely gone to the effort of hiring as much local staff as possible which is good to see (not always the case in the region). What was amazing at meal times was the amount of variety and high quality ingredients that were on offer. The menu in the restaurant changed daily too. I personally think that the quality of the ingredients out shone the cooking standard, I would have preferred to see fewer dishes on offer with more emphasis on taste. I found that food was never bad but often over cooked and under seasoned.
I would like to mention Sara and Ravi as two exceptional members of staff. Sara helped my wife clean up our son after he had vomited a little (this was well above and beyond expectations) and Ravi made our lunches in the Rose lounge relaxing. Both Sara and Ravi were exceptional throughout our stay and helped make the vacation much more enjoyable.

It???s a difficult review for me to write because had I come to Alila with only my husband I would have rated it 5 stars. There is nothing to complain about with this hotel. It???s gorgeous, very tastefully decorated, small enough to feel intimate.
However we came with our 4 year old and baby as the hotel does advertise itself as child friendly. It is not at all.
We actually had a nightmare keeping our kids quiet and it was more stressful than relaxing. We ended up having to have room service every evening rather than go to the restaurant and we kept our son away from the pool.
The place is designed to be an adult retreat. It is completely quiet everywhere. Restaurants, pool, grounds.
When I read reviews about people complaining about kids making noise, I really wish there were other kids when we came as we just felt like we constantly pissed people off when our son was talking. And believe me he is a well behaved child. But he???s four. And babies do cry sometimes.
The hotel should just be honest enough to ban young kids from staying.
However we still had a good time as we went on the butterfly trail which is great for both kids and adults as there are activities along the way for the kids and impressive views for the adults to enjoy.
One day the hotel also organised a visit of villages with a driver and it was absolutely amazing. Madad our driver spoke perfect English and because he grew up in the mountains, could really tell us interesting facts about the villages. He also carried our son when the walk became more difficult.
The hotel is absolutely beautiful and has view points everywhere so it never feels crowded with people taking photos even at sunset.
The bedroom was gorgeous, big enough for a family of four and we had the mountain view rooms. The bathroom is incredible, big and filled with great beauty products. We loved sitting on the patio at sunrise and sunset, I have never been to such a quiet place, you can???t hear a thing.
The food is delicious. The breakfast is one of the best we???ve ever had. Beautiful buffet and you can get anything you want from the menu so it???s freshly cooked. The pancakes were to die for. The cafe/bar area is great for lunch with lovely staff.
Also here???s a tip, ask for the house water, it???s free. Mineral water cost ??7!! That???s just crazy!
The kids club is again a proof that the hotel isn???t kids friendly. It???s quite small and somehow remote. Also it doesn???t have a garden or easy access to outside so you can???t leave your child there for too long as it wouldn???t be any different from being at home in their bedroom. Yes it???s got games and a cinema room but every time we were picking up our son he was watching a movie when we specifically said he should play. Indira is amazing she really loves kids and is very caring. However on her day off they send a guy from the spa?!?!
