Set on Mahé’s southern shore, Mango House is the newest luxury resort on the island. The five-star hotel prides itself on its respect for the local heritage and culture and as such, much of the Mango House experience hinges on its Seychellois roots. The house itself is fascinating. It was originally built by celebrated Italian photographer Gian Paolo Barbieri, so guests should expect the photographer’s distinctive character permeating throughout his once home. Milanese Barbieri chose Mahé, and in particular Anse Aux Poules Bleues in the south of the Seychelles for the unique fusion of different ethnicities and backgrounds who have settled in the archipelago.
Mahé itself is magical. The idyllic setting is clearly one of the island’s major plus points, as well as the crystalline waters that are teeming with kaleidoscopic fish. But it is well worth a look beyond the beach. The island’s capital Victoria (about 40-minutes away from Mango House) is a melting pot of contemporary art, buzzing markets and local life. If you really do want to see the island from the highest possible perspective, make the short drive to Morne National Park. This verdant, inland jungle is brimming with endemic flora and fauna, many of which are unique to the island.
