About the location
Singapore is one of South-East Asia's most exciting cities, boasting sleek skyscrapers, tropical gardens, an eclectic culinary scene and some of the best shopping in the world.
Orchard Road is Singapore's answer to Bond Street. It's a wide, palm-lined boulevard lined with gleaming malls and sleek designer boutiques - the likes of Lanvin, Gucci and Balenciaga have all set up shop here. For a different kind of souvenir, head for Little India, where stalls are stacked with rainbow-bright textiles and lanterns.
If you fancy a break from the skyscrapers and mega-malls, retreat to the famous Botanical Gardens. They're a lush green paradise in the heart of the city - a wander here will take you through cool forests and speciality gardens, passing waterfalls and serene ponds along the way. The orchid garden is a must-see, with more than 1,000 species on display. If you fancy something a little wilder, the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is one of only two areas of urban rainforest in the world.
Singapore's cuisine is one of the most varied in South-East Asia, drawing inspiration from India, Malaysia and China. Hawker centres - huge food halls with dozens of stalls lined up round the edges - offer up some of the most authentic dining experiences. Have a wander round and decide what you fancy - a bowl of spicy noodle soup, a plate of fish head curry (not for the faint-hearted), or a helping of sweet and sour chicken.

My stay got off to a bad start due to road closures around the hotel because of a major conference. I was unaware of this and the taxi dropped me off as close as he could get which meant a 15 minute walk in heat with luggage. Given the conference was planned months before it would have been better if the hotel had advised me in advance to expect road closures.
I had booked an Ocean View room and with my top tier airline FFP card I should be upgraded to a higher category space available at all MO hotels. However here in Singapore that was not done, even though I confirmed they were still selling rooms in the next category. I only realised this when I got to my room, expecting to have been upgraded automatically. When I called reception to ask why I had not been upgraded I was told I was not entitled because I had booked direct through MO. This is completely false. I challenged the receptionist and then she backtracked and said I wasn't upgraded as the hotel was full. I challenged this knowing I could book a room there and then and she then changed her story again saying my airline FFP was not eligible.
I do not appreciate being misled or fobbed off by staff who clearly do not know what agreements MO have with the airline FFPs. I felt further devalued and had only been in the hotel for 15 minutes.
So, the room. It was looking very tired. The photos on-line are clearly airbrushed or taken years ago. The furniture was scruffy, the bathroom rather dirty, tiles broken, shower pressure poor etc. The blinds were dusty and the bedding marked. This really is not MO standards and the rooms are desperately in need of refurbishment. There was a nasty faeces smell wafting in the bathroom throughout the stay. Not only that they are small.
I realised that I had made a big mistake is booking the hotel and I had another reservation later this week. I usually stay at a hotel nearby but they were full due to the conference, however when I told them my predicament they came to the rescue - the hotel next door booked me in with a preferred rate, upgraded me to a suite etc. So I went straight to the front desk to cancel my reservation.
As a fan of MO I was entitled to an F&B credit. On check out I asked why it had not been applied and was curtly told it was not valid at the Japanese restaurant in the hotel, where I had eaten the night before. I challenged this because at NO time was it ever pointed out to me that certain restaurants were excluded, EVER, and given I mentioned at check in I would be dining there this should have been pointed out to me then. Once again I felt the hotel were misleading me. They did however honour the credit given the circumstances but it left a very poor impression.
I left the hotel feeling how poor the service had been, just as when I arrived.
The Japanese restaurant is superb (I will review separately as I don't want them associated with the rest of the hotel) and the barman on duty at MO Bar was exceptional (again separate review as his service was not indicative of the rest of my experience).
In summary, poorly trained or inexperienced staff, tired lacklustre rooms that could be like any good 3 star hotel in Singapore, and the hotel does not have the true Mandarin Oriental feel or flavour.

This is a very nice hotel. Staff is very quick and very attentive to all details. On initial arrival I was given a room with an odd smell and they immediately moved me to a new room. I was given a room with a spectacular view. The breakfast is pretty impressive as well. My room rate came with breakfast included so not sure how expensive it is. I greatly appreciate the quick attentiveness of staff at this hotel. If I had a question or concern it was dealt with immediately. I highly recommend this hotel. The pool is wonderful and also has amazing views.
