About the location
Khao Lak has a prime position on Thailand's west coast - it's bordered by three stunning national parks, and has a sprinkling of marine parks on hand, too. Then, of course, there's the beach. The golden sands roll out along the coast for almost 10 kilometres, bordered by casuarina pines and groves of coconut palms, which hide a handful of luxury hotels.
The resort is named after Lak Mountain ('khao' means mountain in Thai), which sits within the Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park. The park is chock-full of forest trails, waterfalls and dramatic granite mountains, and is perfect for wildlife spotting and leisurely hiking. Nearby Khlong Phanom National Park is also great for nature walks. Khao Sok National Park is the place to go for river canoeing and rafting, and also features caves, karsts and lotus flower-filled rainforest.
Snorkellers and divers can head out on long-tail boats to explore reefs, wrecks and coral-ringed islands. Khao Na Yak reef (just 40 minutes' boat ride away), Surin Islands Marine Park and Similian Islands Marine Park are the three big names.

The hotel itself is nice. The swimming pool was wonderful. However, our room was surprisingly tired and the service was not up to 5* especially service at Spa was bad as well as the treatments provided. It was our worst SPA experience from the hotels in Thailand. In short, I gave feedbacks for improvements for the first visit, the second visit they were like a revenge. I could write another review for that. We couldn???t believe it was from 5 Star JW Marriott. We didn???t leave the hotel for food and dined in the hotels for every breakfast, lunch and dinner. For dinners, we tried three restaurants: Japanese and Thai were good, esp Thai restaurant provide excellent services, some dishes were average some were tasty, portions big and hard to finish them all. Thanks to the staff altogether gave us a special night. However, very disappointed with the service and food provided by Olive restaurant which we had high expectations before visiting. The staff in Olive kept asking the feedbacks from each table except us, especially the table next to us, at least 3-4 times but we just one step away no one came to us. Even the chef came out later, he walked around and stopped by almost every tables except us. We felt so much ignored as if we never existed in the restaurant. Even when we signing the bills, no one asked something like ???is everything ok for you????. Wondering why the whole night, was it because we didn???t order alcohol that night? Or we didn???t look like Caucasian? On the good sides, I must mention the surprised decorations in our room for a special occasion on our second night. The towel-animals were too beautiful and too cute and it made my day! Thanks go to housekeeping.
This is our 5th time to visit Thailand this year. We love to revisit a place for food, spa and sunshine. Despite the ground of this hotel was pretty with a great swimming pool and lovely room decorations, given the overall service and spa experience, don???t think we would come back again.

All the amazing reviews you've read about JW Marriott are absolutely true! As soon as you arrive, the cooling towel and refreshing juice sets the tone and pace for your holiday (especially after a very long journey from the UK). The host at the desk was extremely welcoming and professional, and settled us into our rooms personally.
From that point on, we had an incredible two weeks of family holiday fun. We opted for swim-up rooms and with 3 young kids, we're so glad we did! (Tip: ask for rooms by the children's pool area - we were in block 3). Days went by swimming in the pool, heading to the glorious sandy beach and warm sea and eating amazing food and drinks in the evening as the sun set.
Whilst we loved the beach and resort, we ventured out on a few days. We chose to visit an elephant sanctuary and rode a bamboo float down a river (highly recommend Khao Lak Guru - we were extremely well looked after). Definitely take a trip into Khao Lak and visit the market that sets up 3 times a week - great place to grab some cheap cocktails and dinner!
Like many others, we mostly strolled out of the beach in the evening and spent a few nights at Pinkys (turn left out of resort) - the food is good and they are a lovely team. We also went to Pam's a couple of times too, and I recommend a visit. They come and pick you up and drop you back at the hotel.
The breakfast buffet is phenomenal - our kids were in heaven with all the choice. We ate mainly from the Eastern kitchen and had loads of fresh fruit everyday. The place can get busy, but as long as you grab the staff's attention, you can get your coffee top-ups.
During our stay, there was a big wedding event and after I gave some feedback to the hotel about it, they came back promptly and with an extremely satisfactory response.
The staff are incredible - Pooh, Tong and the other restaurant staff always made a big fuss over our children, which was lovely. Our housekeeper, Nord, was fantastic - always making animals out of towels for the kids (we had a full zoo by the time we left!). And on one day when my wife had to take our son to the local hospital, a lovely member of staff from the hotel medical centre accompanied them, even though it was the end of her shift. This above and beyond the call of duty, and much appreciated.
The Thai people are truly kind, welcoming and full of warmth and everybody we met truly made our stay special.
We will definitely be back as soon as we can!
