Fly to Bilbao and pick up your car.
Drive from there to Getaria (around 50 miles), a lively fishing harbour with some great fish restaurants.
You'll also find a fantastic museum dedicated to the designer Cristobal Balenciaga, who was born here.
From there drive on to Hondarribia, where you will spend the night at Parador de Hondarribia.
Set inside the 10th-century Castle of Charles V, you'll find a charming vine-draped courtyard for coffee and a panoramic terrace offering fantastic views over the harbour.
For dinner, why not graze your way around the town's pintxos bars? Pintxos are small snacks or finger food (a little like tapas), served at bars all over northern Spain.
On day 3, you can either drive straight to Pamplona by toll road or go via St Jean de Luz, Cambio-les-Bains, St Jean Pied du Port and Roncesvalles.
In Pamplona you can visit the Citadel park and follow the route that the bulls run in the San Fermin festivities.
From Pamplona drive to Olite, where your parador (Parador de Olite) is located in a section of the castle.
On day 4, head for Logrono, capital of La Rioja, where you can visit the old town’s tapas bars and winery. Continue to the charming medieval town of Laguardia, which is perched on a hilltop.
Make Najera and the Monastery of Santa Maria la Real your final stop, before driving to Santo Domingo de la Calzada and the Parador de Santo Domingo de la Calzada, where you'll spend two nights.
The Parador is set in a 12th-century pilgrims' hospital, with two fantastic restaurants serving regional dishes and, of course, Rioja wine.
On day 5 you can drive to San Millan de la Cogolla and visit the monasteries of Yuso and Suso.
Afterwards drive to Ezcaray for lunch (we recommend Echaurren restaurant). After lunch, browse the beautiful mohair blankets at the Valganon family shop.
On day 6, head for Argomaniz. On the way, you can visit a Rioja winery at Haro.
From there, either go to Vitoria or to Anana to visit the salt mines, then spend the night at the Parador de Argomaniz.
Housed in a Renaissance palace, the Parador enjoys beautiful views over the surrounding countryside.Drive back to Bilbao the next day and visit the famous Guggenheim Museum, before dropping off your car for your flight home.
