Guide to Board Basis: Everything You Need to Know

When booking a hotel, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is choosing the right board basis. Whether you prefer the freedom of dining out or the ease of having meals and drinks included, understanding your board basis options will help you get the best out of your trip.

In this guide, we’ll break down the most common board basis options, along with the added perks available with premium stays.

What is Bed and Breakfast?

A Bed and Breakfast package includes your accommodation and a morning meal, typically a buffet or á la carte breakfast. It's ideal for travellers who want flexibility in their dining choices.

The biggest benefit of Bed and Breakfast is the freedom to explore local restaurants and cafes, making it perfect for destinations with great food scenes, or those with lots to do in the local area where you may be out exploring for the day and not worried about rushing back. However, if your hotel is in a more remote location, you may find yourself limited to on-site dining options.

What is Half Board?

Half Board includes breakfast and one other meal, usually dinner although some hotels may offer lunch instead. It's a great middle ground for guests who want some meals covered but still want to enjoy the flexibility of eating out occasionally.

Half Board is often more cost-effective than paying for meals separately, especially in resorts that offer upscale and gourmet dining options. The downside is you may feel restricted if you prefer trying different local eateries. Additionally, Half Board typically doesn’t include drinks unless specified.

Some hotel chains offer the opportunity to swap a meal in the hotel for a voucher at a selected restaurant nearby; to help bolster the local community and ensure you truly experience your destination.

What is Full Board?

Full Board covers all three daily meals making it stress-free choice for those who want all meals taken care of. However, drinks (including soft drinks and alcohol) are usually an additional cost unless stated otherwise.

This option is great for family holidays or active holidays where you’d rather not spend time searching for restaurants. That said, if you enjoy discovering local cuisine, you may find Full Board limiting.

What is All Inclusive?

The créme de la créme of board basis, All Inclusive is the most comprehensive option, covering all meals, snacks and most drinks including alcoholic beverages. Some All Inclusive packages may even include experiences, entertainment and even spa treatments.

The biggest benefit of All Inclusive is convenience. You can relax without worrying about extra costs adding up. Some guests, however, feel that All Inclusive discourages them from experiencing local restaurants and the upfront costs can be higher than other board types.

What is a Dine Around Package?

Some luxury hotels and resorts offer Dine Around plans, allowing guests to eat at multiple restaurants, often located on-site or at the hotel’s sister resorts. This is perfect for food lovers who want variety without leaving the hotel.

While these packages provide excellent flexibility, they may come with restrictions – such as a limit on á la carte meals per day or only select restaurants being included. Be sure to check with your Personal Travel Planner so you know exactly what's included in your Dine Around package.

Extra Perks for Premium Bookings

Some hotels offer exclusive benefits when booking certain room categories, usually suites or villas. These can include access to private lounges with complimentary drinks and snacks, VIP pools or beach areas, free spa access, butler service and early check-in or late checkout options. These extras can enhance your overall experience for a more luxurious stay.
