Two Sides to Tenerife: Kat Farmer’s Luxury 4-Day Tenerife Itinerary

One of the largest Canary Islands, Tenerife is known for its year-round sunshine, but as stylist and TV presenter Kat Farmer discovered, the island offers so much more than just warm weather. From luxury resorts to traditional Spanish tapas and authentic entertainment, Tenerife is the ideal winter sun destination for a luxury holiday.

In this blog, Kat shares her experience of a four-day luxury winter sun holiday, exploring the two sides of Tenerife.

Tenerife Itinerary for a Winter Sun Holiday

We chose Tenerife for a four-day winter sun break as having visited Lanzarote two years ago, I was well aware that preconceptions that many of us of a certain generation have of the Canary Islands no longer stand.  The benefits compared to other winter sun destinations are that it’s far more cost effective, it’s only just over a four-hour flight with no time difference and airport transfers are short and efficient.  Not to mention the quality of 5-star luxury is superb.

We selected two destinations to discover different parts of the island, both culturally and geographically.  The South is reported to have better weather, but in all honesty, a balmy 21 degrees in both areas felt a LOT warmer than it does at home.  And whilst a light cardigan is beneficial in the evenings, it’s definitely NOT cold!

Exploring South Tenerife

The Hotel Gran Melia Palacio de Isora in the South is modern luxury on a grand scale.   There definitely is something for everyone, and it’s clearly a very family-friendly hotel.  But if you’re looking for some adult solitude, then the upgrade to Red Level is definitely worth considering.  A private area with its own reception and complimentary snacks and beverages (including a very agreeable Cava,) available all day.  Entertainment in the evening is on offer every night, (I was beyond happy with the flamenco dancers and  Spanish guitarists), and the à la carte breakfast served up an incredible fresh Spanish tortilla whilst I died and went to heaven with the pan con tomate and Iberico ham offering.

We ate in the hotel for two nights, but from speaking to friends of ours who were staying there for longer, there are a plethora of great local restaurants within a couple of minutes' walk.

Exploring North Tenerife

An hour transfer north, and the town of Puerto de la Cruz epitomises why you should really consider a break in Tenerife. Virtually untouched by tourism, it’s an authentic Spanish haven with all the traditional charm and flair you would expect from Spain but may perhaps be surprised to find in the Canaries.

Nestled in the hills above the town (but a very easy 15-minute stroll downhill to reach the coast) is the Hotel Botanico.  This was genuinely the surprise of the break.  The two perfect words to describe this gem of a place are refined and elegant.  Like walking into the luxury of old school Hong Kong, but with the most sublime Spanish hospitality. It’s definitely a more traditional hotel - understated in its luxury, but the service is the best 5-star can offer.

Nothing is too much trouble and when it comes to food - if that’s your prerequisite for a holiday - then book immediately. Speaking honestly, we had slight reservations about the authenticity of a Thai restaurant in Spain, but The Oriental served up food and service better than I’ve ever had.

And whilst traditional Spanish tapas is a plenty in the town, the Spanish on-site restaurant offers a modern take on my favourite cuisine that was utterly sublime. Not to mention the Cheese cart with wine that was recommended by the supremely knowledgeable sommelier (and boy, do they have an amazing selection of wine!)

What To Wear on a Tenerife Winter Sun Holiday

Weather wise, there is no doubt that if you’re after warmth for a winter break then Tenerife should be on your list. Yes, it does get slightly chilly in the evenings but leave your puffer jackets at home as a light cardigan or jacket is all that you’ll need.  Packing wise - if you’re only going for a short break then it IS possible just to take a small carry-on suitcase. Always travel in your heaviest items, although I am the hugest fan of leggings and a longline knit with an oversized cardigan which will double up for wear in the evenings. I always take a selection of light and easy-to-pack long silk dresses, which work as well over a bikini as they do in the evenings with a light cardigan. My top tip is to pack lots of jewellery to dress up those day outfits for the perfect evening attire.

Final Thoughts

Whilst the North of the Island is reputably windier and more temperamental weather wise, we basked in two days of glorious wall-to-wall sunshine. When the clouds did wander across, all I’ll say is it makes for the most incredible skies and doesn’t last for long. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to dive into a tapas restaurant and enjoy a plate of jamon with a glass of Sangria.

For me, the highlight of the trip was discovering a traditional, unspoilt and genuinely Spanish part of Tenerife. Puerto de la Cruz offers a true taste of old school Spain that I personally adore - but with the luxury and comfort of a proper 5-star fabulous hotel.

For my next trip, I am definitely looking to explore more of the Canary Islands to discover more gems that they undoubtedly have to offer.
