From golden beaches to dramatic volcanic landscapes, Gran Canaria is the perfect choice for a luxury holiday. Whether you’re looking for the best things to do in Gran Canaria, where to stay and what to dine on, we’ve put together this handy all-in-one guide to Gran Canaria.
Things to do in Gran Canaria
Maspalomas Dunes Reserve
The Maspalomas Dunes are one of Gran Canaria’s most iconic natural wonders. The vast sand dunes feel more like the Sahara than a beachside resort. Stretching over 400 hectares, this unique landscape is the perfect spot for a photo session or simply soaking up the sun. If you’re feeling really adventurous, why not give sandboarding a try!
Agaete Natural Pools
On the rugged northwest coast of Gran Canaria, you’ll find the natural pools of Agaete, also known as ‘Las Salinas’. It’s a popular swimming spot thanks to its scenic views and nearby harbour. Its three natural pools were formed by volcanic activity and are connected by submarine tunnels. It's a favourite among locals, especially on hot summer days when the sun starts to set.
Aqualand Maspalomas
Aqualand Maspalomas is the perfect spot for some fun in the sun, especially if you’re travelling with kids (or are young at heart!) It’s the largest water park in Gran Canaria, featuring a huge range of slides, wave pools and even a kids’ zone for the little ones. Thrillseekers can tackle high-speed slides, while those seeking a slower pace can kick back and relax as they float along the lazy river.
Mercado del Puerto
Tucked away in the heart of Las Palmas, Mercado del Puerto is a must-visit for foodies. Housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century iron and glass building, this bustling market is the perfect spot to sample freshly caught seafood, try local wines or indulge in a spot of tapas.
Dolphin Watching
One of the most unforgettable experiences in Gran Canaria is heading out on a dolphin watching trip along the island’s stunning coastline. The waters here are home to several species, including bottlenose and common dolphins, and sightings are frequent year-round.
Food in Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria’s food scene combines traditional Spanish flavours with influences from Africa and Latin America for a unique twist. A must-try is papas arrugadas or ‘wrinkled potatoes’, which are boiled in salted water and served with either mojo rojo, a red tangy sauce made from peppers, or rojo verde, a delicious sauce made from coriander and parsley. Another Canarian favourite is ropa vieja, a hearty stew made with shredded beef, chickpeas and vegetables.
Seafood is a big part of locals' diets, and dishes like grilled parrotfish, calamari and sancocho canaria (salted fish with sweet potatoes and mojo sauce) are well worth trying. For something sweet, why not try bienmesabe, a rich almond dessert usually served with ice cream. If you’re visiting a local market keep an eye out for queso de flor, a traditional cheese made using wild thistle for a true taste of Gran Canaria.
