Albufeira

Once a quiet fishing village, Albufeira is now a bustling hotspot with shimmering sands, lively bars, and excellent seafood restaurants. Wander through the charming old town with its whitewashed buildings or head to Praia dos Pescadores for sunbathing and swimming. Take in the cliffside views at Praia da Falésia or explore the colourful Municipal Markets for local produce and crafts.

Castelo de Silves

Step back in time at the impressive Castelo de Silves, a well-preserved Moorish castle perched atop a hill with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Built in the 8th century, its red sandstone walls and historic cisterns tell tales of Portugal’s Moorish past. Explore the archaeological museum nearby to uncover artefacts from the region’s rich history. The castle’s serene gardens and peaceful atmosphere make it a great escape from the crowds.

Faro Old Town

Faro’s Old Town (Cidade Velha) is a hidden gem, enclosed by medieval walls and filled with winding cobbled streets, historic churches, and quaint plazas. Don’t miss the Sé Catedral de Faro with stunning views from its tower. The main square is lined with orange trees, and you’ll find plenty of cafés, bars and restaurants where you can enjoy traditional Portuguese fare.

Water Sports

Thrill-seekers will love Portugal’s fantastic water sports scene. The Algarve’s clear waters and consistent waves make it ideal for surfing (especially in Sagres and Lagos), while kayaking and paddleboarding allow you to explore hidden caves and grottoes at your own pace. For something more adventurous, why not try jet-skiing or parasailing?

Lagos

Lagos is a town in southern Portugal's Algarve region, known for its stunning coastline and lively atmosphere. Explore the 16th-century Fortaleza da Ponta da Bandeira or wander the scenic Marina de Lagos, surrounded by cafés and boats. The real stars of Lagos, however, are its breathtaking beaches, boasting turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs.

What Is There to Eat in the Algarve?

Portuguese cuisine often includes fresh seafood, hearty meats, and comforting flavours shaped by centuries of maritime history. The famous salted cod called bacalhau is prepared in countless ways, with one of the most popular being bacalhau à brás which combines cod with eggs and thinly sliced potatoes, or the richer version baked in cream known as bacalhau com natas. The coastal towns serve incredible grilled sardines, and a fragrant seafood stew called cataplana de marisco, traditionally cooked in a distinctive copper pot. These delicious dishes pair perfectly with Portugal's excellent local wines, from the crisp and refreshing vinho verde to the rich fortified porto wine.

No meal in Portugal is complete without sampling their world famous pastries. The iconic pastel de nata features creamy custard in flaky, caramelized crusts that have become beloved worldwide. Other treats include bolo de arroz, light rice muffins that make the perfect breakfast, sweet cheese tarts called queijadas, and coconut topped buns known as pão de deus. Finish your meal with a strong bica espresso for the authentic Portuguese experience.
