Located on the hills of north eastern Crete, Elounda has a little bit of something for everyone. The beautiful luxury five-star resort is found in the Gulf of Elounda in north-eastern Crete. The hotel is situated just opposite the UNESCO World Heritage Site (and setting for Victoria Hislop’s 2005 book The Island) Spinalonga. The island is superb and well worth a visit for its exceptional 16th-century fortress. Traditional trehandiri boats to make the short crossing over to Spinalonga can be hired in the pretty little town of Elounda, just over two miles away. Strong swimmers might even like to try to get there unaided!
The resort is just a short distance from Plaka, a tiny seaside village with oodles of charm. Blessed with impossibly clear seas and soulful sea views, it’s very easy to spend a happy few hours here watching the world go by at one of the little tavernas. Whilst you’re there, why not enjoy a spot of shopping at one of the boutiques? Platka is less than 15 minutes by road, but nevertheless, we advise taking a taxi to get there.
Despite Elounda being surrounded by luxurious resorts, it has managed to retain its charming, old-world feel. Fishing boats float in the little port, there are lots of great shops, little tavernas and waterfront bars that offer a prime spot for people watching. If you are looking for something a little bigger, then Agios Nikolaos is just a 25-minute drive south. This town of legend is home to Lake Voulismeni, said to be bottomless, and to have been a bathing spot for Greek goddesses Athena and Artemis.
