About the location
The tiny, historic village of Pyrgos sits cupped in Santorini's eastern coast, crowning one of the highest points of the island. Its panoramic views stretch over to the picturesque village of Oia - as you'd imagine, the sunsets from here are jaw-drop stuff.
A classic Cyclades settlement, the village clusters around the ruins of Kasteli Castle, with traditional architecture and whitewashed houses working their way down the hillside. Little winding lanes thread their way through, with crumbling churches and a handful of cafes lining the way. A stay in Pyrgos is like stepping back in time; stroll through its narrow lanes, dine at tiny tavernas and stop at local wineries for a glass of local white.
There's a few bits for history buffs to get their teeth into, too. Don't miss the monastery and its accompanying museum, which hosts a 'Vanishing Santorini' exhibition that looks into the island's past.
15 minutes from Santorini airport.

Carpe Diem is beautiful and is situated on hill with panoramic views of the island. The rooms were huge and the patios were equally impressive. Compared to our stay in Oia previously, this felt far more luxurious. However, the truth is that Thrasos is the real MVP of the hotel; I don't think the experience would've been the same without him. He was amazing in welcoming us to the property and also recommending activities for us to do. We took a few of his recommendations such as going to the highest point in the island and going to the lighthouse and it completely made our trip. I can't recommend this place enough.
One side note, separate from the hotel itself, having stayed in both Oia and here near Pyrgos, I have to say that Pyrgos felt more genuine than Oia. Oia is packed with tourists, which makes sense because of its beauty and location, but in Pyrgos, it felt a little like an adventure in a foreign place which I appreciated a bit more.
