Sheer perfection is to base yourself here when exploring Puglia. We always stay in Belmond hotels when we visit Italy as we love them. This hotel, although much smaller than Belmond properties, manages to attain the same level of excellence in every department. In fact this is the most exceptional "small leading hotel of the world."
It was dark and around 9 pm when the driver sent by the hotel to collect us from the airport arrived at the gates which swung open to reveal a beautiful driveway gorgeously lit and a warm welcome from the moment we reached the entrance to the hotel.
Surprisingly, during our stay at the beginning of May, the hotel was 95% full and yet wherever we were, only a few people seemed to be around which was lovely. In particular, whatever the time of day, the ambience is perfect. This is also a hotel that seems to attract a very nice set of guests. Everyone seems happy and smiling.
Perfectly positioned right by the sea with fabulous views, the levels of service in every single department are quite simply as good as it gets.
The owners and management are to be congratulated for their attention to detail throughout. It is not just the styling and the art but the detail and level of service, for instance I found it impossible to visit the hotel restroom without finding it having just been serviced and immaculate.
We used the hotel as a base for visiting beautiful towns in Puglia, returning mid-afternoon to relax by the pool along with full service from pool attendants and restaurant.
This really is the most idyllic hotel from which to explore the region.
Breakfasts are wonderful, providing the most glorious local produce. I always ask for carrot juice at hotels and they make the best fresh carrot juice I have ever tasted. Their local orange juice is also excellent. The breakfast service is warm, friendly and as good as it gets. In particular, Lena on the egg station is an absolute treasure. We missed her on her day off. Her smile, warmth and morning welcome goes hand in hand with the excellence of whatever she cooks.
Dinner in the restaurant first night was a delight with wonderful dishes, easily the best we have enjoyed in the region. 2nd day it wasn't as good when I ordered a Tomahawk steak... Next time we visit, I'll order one again. It turns out that the restaurant is managed by Angelo who many years ago was a waiter working under possibly the best ma??tre in the world, Diego Masciaga who used to be a restaurant director at Waterside Inn, the three Michelin star restaurant in Bray that my wife and I have been frequenting for over 30 years. Before that Angelo was at another great hotel also near Ascot, Cliveden, also privately owned by perfectionists who also started with optician shops. I'm sure if I chatted to other members of the team, there would be similarly excellent CVs.
Unusually the owners started as Opticians...as did the owners of Cliveden. Both clearly perfectionists.
We arrived from the airport in a transfer arranged by the hotel. The following morning they sourced a classic Fiat convertible for us which was brought to the hotel. This was probably the first time I had ever driven such a small car, but it was great fun for touring Puglia. Five days later on the morning of our departure, I needed to Provide the car with a full petrol tank but WAZE Show one anywhere near. Reception, we're trying to explain to me how to get there when an unassuming guy sitting on a nearby sofa wearing a sweatshirt told them that he would drive there and I could follow him and then he would show me the way back. I thought he was probably one of the Maintenance staff. Very nice guy. He turned out to be the owner!
Our junior suite, which was suite 231, enjoys the most exceptional views and we will request it future. Everyone at the hotel made our stay especially relaxing. This is now one of our favourite hotels in Italy along with Belmond's Italian hotels.
For a 49-room boutique hotel, they have a staffing level that could easily operate a 100+ room hotel to a high standard which is another reason service is so very good and intuitive.
I was particularly impressed with housekeeping who work as a team of three with each having their own task doing one room at a time. That was a tiny bit of mess, barely noticeable on the railing of a gorgeous terrace... We came back that day with the team at work and I was on the terrace when one of them checked everything and spotted a little bit of mess on the railing. They don't miss anything.
I'm writing this review on our last day and my wife and I really do feel at home and will be sorry to depart even though our next hotel in Matera should also be amazing as it is a former palace with only 20 rooms overlooking the entire UNESCO site. If not for that hotel existing, we would not have left but it just had to be done. My wife and I stay in a lot of hotels fairly constantly although I review comparatively few. I simply had to review this hotel.
Housekeeping were extremely good throughout our stay and attention to detail goes so far as the appearance of all staff who are beautifully attired. Unusually the overhead shower as well as the handheld shower fitted to the bath were both excellent with high-pressure and hot water arriving almost instantly.
Everywhere we walked in the grounds we enjoyed the beautiful planting and extraordinary attention to detail. This would be the perfect hotel to completely take over for a wedding. They would be able to handle it with ease and provide perfection. Also, if you booked out of high season, you would enjoy the most fantastic value.
I must mention Lesley from guest relations who seems to be everywhere and is terrific. She greeted us on arrival and Is clearly on top of her game. Lesley also arranged our Fiat and checked on everything throughout our first day. When the car was delivered, of course she was there checking as she does on everything.
This is a hotel to fall in love with and the entire staff work together seamlessly. Starting the day with the wonderful breakfasts is a joy, seated on the terrace, especially being served by the charming Gianni (see photo) who is everywhere and has worked at the hotel for the past three years...see photo. Most of the staff are actually deserving of a mention...look out for Angella who makes terrific cocktails...the RIGHT way. Her 'penicillin' cocktail was 'historic' and she makes the perfect champagne cocktail the traditional way with brandy, a sugar cube soaked in angostura bitters, with champagne and a twist of orange. She used cognac for us which is best rather than Italian brandy. Angela's champagne cocktail was far better than the version we had in the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel last year, by a long way.
Everything was way above reasonable expectations and I am delighted to be able to provide this review. I didn't expect valet parking, but they also do that. I just called down a couple of minutes before we were ready to go round exploring the car was there waiting. I can't recommend Cannes Brianch enough and it is the perfect base for exploring the region. A hotel, which delivers and also offers value.
Even the printed bill on departure smelled nice...they spray it with the hotel scent.
Thank you for a wonderful and above all particularly relaxing stay.
