Grand Hotel Montesol Ibiza, Curio Collection by Hilton

Ibiza, Ibiza Town

Dating back to 1933, this elegant Neo-Classical building was the island’s first hotel. It occupies an enviable position right in the heart of Ibiza Town and is only steps from the harbour, making this the perfect choice for your Ibiza break. Rooms and suites are classically decorated and offer comfort and space with many featuring a king-size bed. The hotel is a protected building, complete with a stunning original edifice, while Lázaro Rosa-Violán’s interior challenges convention with simplistic modern styles and select historic touches. Add to the mix a well-known tapas restaurant inside the hotel, and this becomes a perfect all-rounder.

The hotel has 33 rooms.

About the location

Island capital Ibiza Town backs on to natural bay in the south-east of the island. The old town rises up above the harbour in a scribble of whitewashed lanes. Wander the streets to spy Gothic Catalan architecture – Mediterranean-view watchtowers, Sa Capeletta Castle and Taules Gate. There are architectural surprises here, too, including the Modernist house-turned-museum, Museu Casa Broner.

Some of the best restaurants in Ibiza also gather here – from Spanish tapas bars and French bistros to ice-cream parlours and Catalan bakeries. The opposite side of the harbour sings a slightly different tune, placing a chic casino and polished seafood restaurants next to a glossy marina. You’ll also find the original Pacha nightclub over here.

A regular ferry pootles from Ibiza Town to the little isle of Formentera – home to some of the best beaches in the Balearics, as well as a windmill-dotted interior made famous in the ‘60s and ‘70s by the likes of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd.

Staff is at best indifferent, at worst, scornful. Decor is offensive. Took 30 mins to check me in and they demanded a $100/night hold on my credit card for "incidentals", which is what held me up...
