January Blues

Winter is here and it’s time to beat those January Blues. That’s why we’ve created a guide to the best Blue Flag beaches around the world.  

What is a Blue Flag beach? The iconic Blue Flag is a voluntary award which is recognised around the world. It is awarded when a beach meets stringent environmental criteria including water quality and safety. So, without further ado, let’s see which beaches made the list!

Koukounaries Beach, Skiathos

Koukounaries Beach can be found on the beautiful Greek island of Skiathos. With fine white sand and crystal-clear waters, it’s no wonder it is so popular. You’ll find a good variety of water sports as well as some Greek tavernas serving up local food and drinks here. Around 700m in length it’s perfect for taking a stroll under the Greek sun to the sound of the waves.

Martinhal Beach, Portugal

Found on the western tip of the Algarve region of Portugal, Martinhal is a stunning Blue Flag beach. Surrounded by dunes and cliffs, there is plenty of space on this sandy beach. Did you know this was the starting point for explorers setting off to sail around the world? You could even hop on a boat yourself and explore the nearby sea caves.

Cala Mondrago, Majorca

Situated on the beautiful Spanish island of Majorca, Cala Mondrago can be found on the southeast coast not far from Cala d’Or. A gorgeous sandy beach protected by two headlands; the sea is a beautiful shade of blue, perfect for swimming. Part of a national park, the beach has Blue Flag status and is good for families with children thanks to its shallow waters and fine sand.

Maspalomas, Gran Canaria

In the south of Gran Canaria, Maspalomas beach offers plenty of leisure options as well as night life. Beside the sea you’ll find miles upon miles of sand dunes that meet the famous Maspalomas Lighthouse which saw the first tourists arrive on the island. You can also walk along the busy promenade that is home to a selection of restaurants and souvenir shops.

Playa Delfines, Mexico

Playa Delfines is located in Cancun on the southern tip of the Zona Hotelera and is one of the most scenic beaches in Mexico. Translated as “Dolphin Beach” it was named after the pods of dolphins who frequented here. Nowadays, they are rare to spot, but can sometimes be seen in the early morning. Playa Delfines is famous for its spectacular views of Cancun where turquoise waters meet ribbons of golden sand.
