MarBella, Mar-Bella Collection, Corfu

With 388 rooms, this hotel is extensive, but with some clever design work and landscaping, it manages to maintain an air of exclusivity. The fresh water and salt water pools are shaded by tall tropical palm trees and white canvas parasols, under which sunbathers can recline on luxury sun loungers. The small sandy beach also benefits from sun loungers and thatched parasols and leads down to crystal clear waters that sparkle in the sunlight.

Ionian islands

The Ionian Islands lie in a chain along the west coast of mainland Greece. Their cooler climate makes for lush scenery with forested mountains, olive groves and vineyards. Also known as the ‘seven islands’ the Ionians have been occupied by various cultures and so feature a mix of French, British and Venetian architecture. Kefalonia is the largest island, distinctive for its soaring mountains, underground lakes, sandy bays, vineyards and well-known as the setting for Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.

Corfu is one of the greenest Greek islands and is laced with sandy coves. Don’t miss a visit to the lively Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while inland you’ll find mountains and rolling hills. Zakynthos, also known as Zante, is a quieter island famous for its shipwrecks, sea caves, turtles and long peaceful beaches.
