Sovereign Spotlight: Mexico

At Sovereign Luxury Travel we have over 50 years’ experience and over this time we have discovered destinations that have lots to offer. We have travelled the world to bring you our extensive knowledge and secret treasures.

Without further ado, introducing the latest destination in our Sovereign Spotlight series for February…MEXICO!

Holidays to Mexico offer something for everyone, with ancient ruins, beautiful beaches and clear blue waters. We’ve picked out a few of our favourite things about Mexico for you to enjoy below.

Chichén Itzá

Chichen Itza is one of the largest preserved archaeological sites in the world. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it attracts visitors year on year for the ancient Mayan marvels and rich history. Within the vast area there is an old sports arena where members of the royal family used to sit on either side of the field. There are various sized stones which have been cleverly arranged and formulated, working to create an echo allowing both sides to communicate with one another without the rest of the public hearing. We recommend visiting with a guide as there’s so much to see that it’s easy to miss things.

Akumal

On the coast of Mexico’s Riviera Maya, Akumal is a small beach resort just an hour south of Cancun. Here you’ll find white sands and warm waters where you can go swimming with turtles in their natural habitat. When you stand on the beach and look to the horizon you can see a break where the second largest coral reef in the world can be found. The name “Akumal” comes from the Mayan word for “place of the turtles”, and you can even take a small boat out to go snorkelling.

Holbox

Holbox is the only place in Mexico where you can witness bioluminescence for yourself. Found off the northeast of Yucatan, this island paradise is one not to be missed on a trip to Mexico. Holbox has a huge stretch of beach and is home to millions of microorganisms which, when hit by the waves, create a blue light phenomenon known as bioluminescence. The best time to see this is between April to November when it is completely dark. During the day you can see dolphins swimming in the waters and sometimes jumping through the air!

Xcaret

Xcaret is a water and theme park located in the jungle just outside of Playa del Carmen on the edge of the Caribbean Sea. There are so many activities on offer here with underground rivers, snorkelling, a beach, and a natural animal sanctuary to name but a few. In the evening you can enjoy ‘Xcaret Mexico Espectacular’, an authentic show featuring more than 300 artists showcasing vibrant traditions such as the ‘Owl’s Dance’ which recreates the time when lords of the underworld enjoyed a ballgame with the twins, Huainpú and Ixbalanque. Xcaret in Cancun and Riviera Maya celebrates Mexico’s past and present with its rich history, tradition, and culture.

Tulum

Tulum is an up-and-coming destination on the Yucatan peninsula. The town centre is home to a number of bohemian bars, restaurants and shops so you can really soak up the culture here. In Tulum you can also find the ruins of an ancient Mayan port city with the large castle standing proud at the top of a cliff overlooking the white sandy beach and crystal-clear waters. Tulum was one of the last cities to be built and inhabited by the Mayan civilisation and is not to be missed by history-loving travellers.
