Without further ado, introducing the latest destination in our Sovereign Spotlight series for May…BALI!

Bali is a popular Indonesian island thanks to its beautiful beaches, iconic rice terraces, magnificent temples, and heart-warming culture. We’ve picked out a few of our favourite things about Bali for you to enjoy below.

Visit the beaches

Bali is well known for its pristine beaches that meet crystal clear waters. The sunsets here are absolutely breathtaking as the sky lights up in shades of red and orange. You are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches here, but we recommend Nusa Dua Beach and Seminyak Beach.

Nusa Dua can be found on the eastern coast of the island and has calm waters and perfect white sands. This beach is ideal for families with young children as the waters are shallow making it easy to swim and play.

Head south to Seminyak and you’ll be greeted with luxury resorts, gourmet restaurants and trendy bars. Very chic, this popular beach is the ideal haven to relax and soak up the sun with a cocktail in hand.

Tour the temples

Home to some of the most beautiful and iconic temples in the world, Bali astounds with its intricate architecture and impressive monuments. Known as “pura” in the local language, these temples play an important role in the culture and religion of Bali.

One of the most famous is Tanah Lot Temple which is located on a rock in the ocean. One of the most photographed landmarks in all of Bali, it is special thanks to its amazing sunset views.

On a cliff overlooking the ocean stands Uluwatu Temple. Home to a family of monkeys, these cheeky creatures treat visitors to impromptu performances and antics. You can also watch a traditional Balinese dance performance here, it’s a real spectacle not to be missed!

No matter which temple you choose, you are guaranteed to be in awe at the beauty of these masterpieces. Remember to dress conservatively, covering your legs and shoulders.

Try the local cuisine

Blending hints of Indonesia, Chinese and Indian influences, the cuisine in Bali is unique and tasteful. Mixing sweet, spicy, and savoury flavours, the cuisine is an experience for the tastebuds. One of the most popular dishes is nasi goreng. This is a fried rice dish served with an egg on top – it mixes vegetables, spices and either chicken or shrimp.

Another favourite across menus is babi guling, a roast suckling pig. Filled with flavour, this juicy meat is a Balinese specialty often served during special occasions. First its marinated in a blend of spices and is then roasted on a spit.

A trip to Bali is not complete without trying the juicy fruit. There’s lots to choose from including snake fruit, mangosteen and rambutan.

Explore the rice terraces

Bali is famous for its verdant green rice terraces stretching as far as the eye can see. Testament to years old farming traditions, the rice terraces offer visitors a glimpse into the rural way of life.

Perhaps the most famous is the Tegalalang Rice Terraces found in the Ubud region of central Bali. Cascading down the hillside, these rice terraces offer breathtaking views across the landscape. For a special experience, visit in the morning or late afternoon when the sunlight is soft, and the colours are crisp.

Alternatively, head west to Jatiluwih Rice Terraces. A UNESCO World Heritage site, these terraces cover over 600 hectares of land and invite you to enjoy a peaceful atmosphere in the heart of nature.
